Tarantulas consist of a collection of eight hundred plus kinds of large hairy spiders. Some of them lives in burrows and others are arboreal, living above ground. Many of the Tarantulas available at pet shops are very docile and can easily be handled by it’s keeper. Tarantula bites are very rare and even if they do bite it is usually a dry bite where no venom is injected. Tarantulas cannot, like many people believe, jump. Tarantulas can hardly leap a few centimeters and even if they could jump their bodies would not be able to absorb the impact when they land. Tarantulas are actually very interesting pets to keep when observing their behavior in your Tarantula setup. The Goliath bird eating spider (Theraposa blondi) can reach a leg span of twenty five centimeters and is one of the largest tarantulas available in the pet trade. Before a decision is made to keep a Tarantula as a pet, it is imperative to do proper homework on the selected spider. Knowledge of the proper setup for your spider is very important and will eliminate hassles and setbacks with your pet.
