Text Box: Text Box: Mexican red knee tarantula – Brachypelma smithi The Mexican red knee tarantula is a docile species and makes an excellent pet for the beginner. Tarantulas are normally recognized by the additional tibial hooks that develop at their last molting. Some species do not develop this. The males of this species are long legged and dark overall. They have more vivid red-orange in their legs. The Mexican red knee has a slow growth rate compared to many other tarantula species, but this is characteristic of most long living species.
